Edward-Elmhurst Health

Shawn Roark was placed as the vice president of payer strategy for Edward-Elmhurst Health in Naperville, Illinois, and as the president of Illinois Health Partners. Edward-Elmhurst Health, created in 2013 with the merger of Edward Hospital & Health Services in Naperville and Elmhurst Memorial Healthcare in Elmhurst, is one of the larger integrated health systems in the state, with revenue of approximately $1.2 billion. Its two acute care hospitals and one behavioral health hospital are part of a network that provides comprehensive health care to residents in the west and southwest suburbs of Chicago through 100 locations served by 8,000 employees. Illinois Health Partners is one of the broadest networks for HMO patients in Illinois, with a panel of 1,800 physicians and approximately 150,000 covered lives. In his role, Shawn works to break down silos to create a clinically integrated network, leading the development and implementation of comprehensive integration plans among affiliated hospitals, payers, and participating physicians. He has responsibility for all managed care strategies for Edward-Elmhurst Health, and the further development of accountable care organizations and population health models of care.

Shawn brings to the position deep expertise in managed care contracting, along with an understanding of clinical care and quality gained through his early career experience as a nurse. Shawn has had almost two decades of healthcare delivery experience, and is a high-energy, data-driven problem solver who is well connected with payers and payer strategies in the Chicago market.

Before joining Edward-Elmhurst Health, Shawn served as the chief transformation and population health officer for Genesis HealthCare System in Zanesville, Ohio, an independent integrated healthcare delivery system with annual net revenue of approximately $500 million. A primary referral center, Genesis provides the most comprehensive scope of services available in southeastern Ohio, with an extensive network of more than 300 physicians and multiple outpatient care centers throughout the region. There, Shawn was responsible for managed care contracting, corporate compliance, case management, population health, cardiac rehabilitation services, an employed physician practice, diabetes education, and strategic planning. He also provided administrative oversight to the Contract and Finance Committee, Utilization Review Committee, and Credentialing Committee. Shawn served as a thought leader, developing a strategic plan for transitioning to value-based and risk-based contracting and population health management, and building out resources and developing partnerships to ensure that the system had the necessary access to support these contracts.

Previously, Shawn served as the vice president of managed care, director of managed care contracting, and director of clinical integration at Advocate Health Care in Downers Grove, Illinois; as the executive director of quality management for MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Illinois; and as the manager of clinical data services for Edward Hospital. He began his career in nursing as a trauma systems specialist with Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center and as a charge nurse at Rosewood Care Center, both in Joliet, Illinois.

Shawn is originally from the southwest suburbs of Chicago. He completed associate’s degrees in management and nursing at Joliet Junior College, a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences at Illinois State University, and an MBA in management information systems through Northcentral University in Prescott, Arizona, and is currently pursuing a Juris Doctor from Mitchell Hamline School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota. Shawn and his wife are the parents of two children. Outside of work, he enjoys keeping fit, particularly jogging.

QLK’s Sharman McGurn led the search to recruit Shawn to Edward-Elmhurst Health, where he has been in place since November 14, 2016.
