Position: Associate Executive Director

Location: Rosemont, Illinois


The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the professional organization representing more than 9,000 oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United States, supports its members' ability to practice their specialty through education, research, and advocacy. AAOMS members comply with rigorous continuing education requirements and submit to periodic office evaluations, assuring the public that office procedures and personnel meet stringent national standards.

As of January 2020, AAOMS had a total membership of 11,436, including:

  • 5,132 fellows/members,
  • 234 provisional fellows/members,
  • 247 affiliate members,
  • 2,135 life fellows/members,
  • 286 candidates for membership,
  • 1,206 resident members,
  • 935 retired fellows/members,
  • 26 honorary fellows,
  • 159 inactive fellows/members, and
  • 1,076 allied staff members.

Job Description:

Reporting to the executive director of the AAOMS, the associate executive director (AED) is a member of the senior management team, overseeing the Division of Practice Management, Health Policy, and Government Affairs. The AED is responsible for all AAOMS programs and activities related to state and federal legislation and regulations, health policy and reimbursement provisions, practice management, and small business initiatives that directly impact practicing oral and maxillofacial surgeons and their professional and allied staff. The AAOMS Political Action Committee (OMSPAC) is also under the purview of this division, and the AED is responsible for overseeing the duties and function of the PAC and ensuring its compliance with FTC rules and regulations. To protect the integrity of one's ability to advocate effectively – and legally – this position requires enrollment and appropriate federal filings as a lobbyist. Additionally, the AED is responsible for overseeing the management and activities of the AAOMS' contracted lobbyists residing in Washington, DC.

  • A Juris Doctorate is required; a master's degree is preferred
  • License to practice law in Illinois
  • 5-10 years of related experience at a senior level in the healthcare, association, or government sectors
  • Demonstrated experience in advocacy and healthcare delivery (scope of practice) is required
  • Experience in the management of legal matters within a healthcare association
  • Experience overseeing ethical and professional conduct activities within a healthcare association
  • Significant experience in program development and budget management
  • Strong experience in health policy and policy development
  • Proven leader of personnel, including tenured management and administrative staff
  • Experience in the analysis of legislation and the development of advocacy initiatives directly related to healthcare initiatives
  • Significant experience understanding state and federal regulatory laws and requirements, including activities of the Centers for Disease Control, Food and Drug Administration, Drug Enforcement Agency, Department of Health and Human Services, Veterans Association, and state boards and agencies
  • Significant experience with monitoring and forecasting emerging health policy trends related to oral health payment model initiatives, physician reimbursement, practice administration, and socioeconomic environmental factors – at both the state and federal levels – is required
