Position: Chief Operating Officer

Dedicated to its mission of empowering physician practices, providers, and patients to create meaningful change in healthcare, the Medical Group Management Association's (MGMA) membership includes over 40,000 medical practice leaders, representing more than 12,500 various healthcare organizations throughout the United States. Known for empowering its members as well as the healthcare community at large, the MGMA provides more than 700 cutting-edge resources and solutions. Annually, the MGMA generates $30 million in total revenue, the predominance from membership dues, conferences and education services, information and publication services, consulting services, membership lists and affinity revenue, executive partnerships, and certification services. Thoughtfully organized into four verticals (i.e., Association (and Government Affairs); Operations; Business Intelligence; and Industry Insights), the MGMA's structure was designed to facilitate business accountability, audience reach and impact, data-driven decision-making, and top performance outcomes.

Job Description:

The Chief Operating Officer reports directly to the president and CEO and is accountable for the successful leadership and advancement of the MGMA's internal operations and the team members included therein. Direct reports to the COO:

  • Vice President, Association vertical
  • Vice President, Industry Insights vertical
  • Director, Information Technology
  • Director, Project Management

The primary role of the COO – and most critical to the MGMA's success – is to instill and maintain highly efficient internal processes, data-supported methodologies, rigor, and an outcomes-focused culture of accountability across the entire organization. With CEO oversight, the COO will function as the operational partner to the chief financial officer and provide operational insights relative to exploring new business partners/ventures, as appropriate.


  • Experience: 15+ years of operations management experience in a complex healthcare organization or non-profit association; minimum of 7 years as a senior executive (vice president or C-level) with team member oversight
  • Education: MBA, MHA or related discipline required
