Founded in 1982 by Peoria, Illinois native Nancy G. Brinker, whose sister Susan had succumbed to breast cancer two years prior, Susan G. Komen is the only organization that addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts, such as research, community health, global outreach, and public policy initiatives. It has grown into the world's largest nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer; to date, the organization has funded more than $920 million in research and provided more than $2 billion in funding to screening, education, treatment, and psychosocial support programs for millions of people in more than 60 countries. More than 100,000 survivors and activists are part of the Susan G. Komen organization, involved in more than 120 cities and communities and mobilizing more than 1.7 million friends and neighbors each year through events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® Series. Susan G. Komen works with local health groups around the world and through komen.org to help millions of women in nearly 200 countries overcome the social, cultural, and economic barriers to breast health and treatment. The Susan G. Komen-Chicago service area, which covers all of Cook, Kane, DuPage, McHenry, and Lake Counties, has invested more than $16 million locally since 1997; 25% of its funds are earmarked for national research, while 75% remain in the local community.
The executive director is an energetic and engaging development and nonprofit professional that will provide leadership, vision, and direction to the Chicago affiliate, the broader Susan G. Komen organization, and the breast health community. In partnership with the Board of Directors, this executive will build on and leverage the brand and substantial history of impact in the breast cancer fight. Specifically, they will use their skills and network to engage more volunteers, major donors, and C-suite decision-makers to support and fund the mission. Also, this leader will be accountable for planning, budget approval and stewardship of resources, staffing as well as representation of Susan G. Komen-Chicago Affiliate to elected officials, the public, and the Komen Affiliate Board and national executive team in Dallas. The ED works closely with the affiliate board of directors and Komen's headquarters in Dallas, as well as collaborates with metro affiliate chapters across the country.
