Bassett Medical Center

Position: Program Director, Internal Medicine Residency

Location: Cooperstown, New York

Bassett Medical Center and its parent, Bassett Healthcare Network, are nationally‐renowned rural healthcare organizations. Physician-run, they are built on the same model as the Mayo Clinic, serving a 5,400-square- mile swath of central New York State. Bassett Medical Center is a 180-bed, acute care inpatient teaching facility offering 24-hour emergency and trauma care, comprehensive cancer and heart care, dialysis, and most medical and surgical specialties. Bassett Clinic is located on the same campus as the medical center, and provides outpatient primary and specialty care. Through the Bassett Regional Network, Bassett physicians and other health professionals provide preventive, primary, convenient, and specialty outpatient care at various multispecialty clinics, rural health clinics and school-based health centers throughout an eight-county region; ambulatory patient visits for the system approach 700,000 annually. Affiliated hospitals include O'Connor Hospital in Delhi, Cobleskill Regional Hospital, Little Falls Hospital, and A.O. Fox Hospital in Oneonta.

The Bassett Research Institute and the New York Center for Agricultural Medicine and Health conduct research in basic and clinical science, as well as population and public health studies. Bassett has been known for research throughout its history, the first tissue transplants in humans having been done there, for which a Nobel Prize was awarded. The organization has also been recognized in a report to the U.S. Congress for its innovations in rural care.

Bassett has been closely allied with Columbia University's Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons for almost 100 years, and hosts a unique, highly competitive four-year track of the medical school that emphasizes training in robust performance improvement and the social determinants of health, allowing medical students to practice at Bassett Medical Center for 13 months. The current interim dean of the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons is a Bassett Healthcare Network trustee, reflecting the unique and close relationship between the institutions. The medical center offers postgraduate residency training programs in Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Transitional Year.
