Abraham Thomas, MD, MPH was appointed senior vice president and chair of medicine at Lutheran HealthCare. Before taking on this position, Dr. Thomas was division head, endocrinology and Whitehouse chair in endocrinology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Prior to this, Abraham worked at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School where he served as medical director of the weight management program. Dr. Thomas is a fellow at the American College of Physicians, past-president of the American Federation of Medical Research, an elected member of the Central Society of Clinical and Translational Research, as well as a member of several significant professional medical societies, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Endocrine Society and the American Diabetes Association. He has been honored by Top Doctors Hour Detroit magazine and was nominated for the American Diabetes Association Diabetes Champion Award. In 2012, he received the U.S. Food and Drug Advisory Committee Service Award after serving as chair of the FDA, endocrinologic and metabolic advisory committee. In addition, he has served on the editorial boards for various publications such as the Diabetes Spectrum, the Journal of Diabetes Mellitus and the Journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB). His research interests, which were funded by the NIH and CDC, are in diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Thomas was born in Wales, United Kingdom, but he immigrated to the U.S. with his family as a child. He was raised in New York and New Jersey and received his BA and MD from Columbia University and his MPH from Harvard University’s School of Public Health. Dr. Thomas is married and has one child in high school. In his spare time, he enjoys watching his favorite basketball team, the Brooklyn Nets, play.
