Amy Compton-Phillips, MD was placed as executive vice president and chief clinical officer for Providence Health & Services in Portland, Oregon. Providence is the third-largest not-for-profit health system in the United States, providing care in the states of Alaska, California, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. The system includes more than 76,000 employees, who serve in 34 hospitals, 475 physician clinics, 22 long-term care facilities, 19 hospice and home health programs, and 693 supportive housing units in 14 locations. Each day, Providence cares for more than 1,200 patients in its long-term care settings, more than 4,000 in its hospitals, more than 15,000 in its clinic settings, more than 7,000 in its home health and palliative care programs, and almost 800 in supportive housing. Dr. Compton-Phillips brings to the position an extensive background in directing patient care programs and leading healthcare organizations to broad-based improvements.
Before joining Providence, Dr. Compton-Phillips served as the chief quality officer for The Permanente Federation in Oakland, California, a subsidiary of Kaiser Permanente created to focus on standardizing patient care and performance under one name and system of policies. There, she focused on improving the value of care delivery, creating infrastructure to lead and implement healthcare improvement across the Kaiser Permanente system. During her tenure, Dr. Compton-Phillips was a key organizational leader in developing capacity in patient-driven design, enhancing clinical outcomes and the care experience, and addressing the affordability of care.
Previously, Dr. Compton-Phillips served as a physician director of population care for the Mid-Atlantic region of Kaiser Permanente, and as a physician director for Columbia Gateway Medical Center in Columbia, Maryland. She began her career as an internal medicine physician and service chief with Kaiser Permanente
Dr. Compton-Phillips is originally from St. Louis, Missouri. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Johns Hopkins University and her medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She is also a graduate of the Advanced Leadership Program at the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School.
