Angela Sersha was selected for the role of executive director of legal services for Sanford Health System’s Bismarck market in North Dakota. Sanford is the largest rural, not-for-profit healthcare system in the nation, a unique integrated system that consists of health services, development and research, a health plan that covers more than 175,000 lives, one of the most successful healthcare foundations in the nation, and academic affairs, and has locations in 132 communities in nine states, as well as international clinics in Ghana, China, and Germany. The Bismarck market of Sanford Health encompasses Sanford Medical Center Bismarck (a 223-bed, Magnet-designated Level II trauma center), as well as Bismarck Cancer Center (a joint venture between Sanford and St. Alexius Medical Center), a campus of North Dakota State University’s nursing school, Sanford Children’s Hospital, a multispecialty clinic, a network of community walk-in clinics and same-day surgery, home health and DME, pharmacy and laboratory, Sanford Rehabilitation Center, and Tom & Frances Leach Bismarck Dialysis. In her role, Angela will be responsible for identifying and analyzing legal issues, presenting risks and alternatives, and providing legal advice to the Bismarck leadership team. She will handle a variety of diverse legal duties in the area of healthcare law, such as fraud and abuse, bioethics, healthcare business transactions, medical staff issues, contract review and negotiation, and licensure issues.
Angela most recently served as an in-house senior corporate attorney for Schwan’s Shared Services, LLC in Marshall, Minnesota. There, she was primarily responsible for supporting Schwan’s Global Supply Chain, Inc., the manufacturing and procurement subsidiary for all affiliates and subsidiaries of The Schwan Food Company, a privately held, multi-billion dollar company; as well as Schwan’s Food Service, Inc., the foodservice sales subsidiary. Angela advised, guided, and supported the overall business strategies of these subsidiaries, ensuring that corporate governance policies and contracting procedures were followed. She assisted in the creation and development of best practices in a highly regulated industry, focusing on contracting and procurement, human resources issues, policy drafting, social compliance, regulatory agency site visits, and PMO. In addition to handling legal issues, she played a role in developing the annual operating plan and strategic growth plan for sales and distribution. She managed and negotiated miscellaneous real property matters; selected and managed outside counsel; provided ongoing training on legal matters; and provided labor and employment support. She also drafted, negotiated, and finalized contracts from the RFP stage to the executed agreement in all aspects of procurement.
Angela is originally from Minnesota. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota-Duluth, and her Juris Doctor from the University of North Dakota School of Law. After completing her education, Melissa spent five years as a judicial clerk for the Honorable James B. Florey in Virginia, Minnesota before joining Schwan’s.
QLK’s Jake Barto and Mike Quick led the search to recruit Angela to Sanford Health, where her duties will begin on April 4, 2017.
