Bassett Medical Center

Russell Moore, MD, was placed as director of the internal medicine residency program at Bassett Medical Center; recognized in a report to the U.S. Congress for its innovations in rural care, Bassett serves a 5,000-square-mile swath of central New York State. The 180-bed, acute care inpatient teaching facility, paired with the outpatient Bassett Clinic, is closely allied with Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, and hosts a highly competitive four-year track emphasizing training in robust performance improvement and the social determinants of health. In his role, Dr. Moore will lead the 30-resident internal medicine program into the future, maintaining its strengths and existing innovations, while looking ahead and imagining how Bassett can model new approaches to providing excellence in care through dynamic and responsive education, in order to address the challenges, disparities, and personnel shortages confronting rural and other American communities.

Dr. Moore joined Bassett Medical Center in 2017 as a hospitalist, and his potential was quickly identified, resulting in his promotion to associate director for the network hospitalist program at the beginning of 2020; in this role, he helped coordinate coverage and services over five hospitals and improve transitions of care through the network. In March of 2021, Dr. Moore took on the additional responsibility of associate director for the internal medicine program, providing valuable insights to help make meaningful improvements, including the compensation of residents who are teaching, improving the time-off request process, and resolving issues related to the internal reporting system; he was also instrumental in the organization’s successful management of the demands of the COVID pandemic through his work on best utilizing hospital resources.

Originally from northern New Jersey, Dr. Moore holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Florida International University, and an MD from Rosalind Franklin University/Chicago Medical School. Following his pediatric residency at the University of Buffalo, Dr. Moore served as an assistant professor and hospitalist on the teaching service at UBMD in Buffalo before joining Bassett Medical Center.

Outside of work, Dr. Moore enjoys hiking and kayaking with his family.
